Andrew Romanoff schedules press conference to talk about his campaign for the Senate
Former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff’s invitation to a 12:15 p.m. news conference at his headquarters today to talk about his campaign has set off speculation about whether he’s withdrawing from the race or raised a ton of money in the fourth quarter. There also
is some speculation that he’ll endorse John Hickenlooper for governor and recommit to his campaign. Romanoff is running against appointed Michael Bennet for the Democrats’ nomination to the Senate. While he showed that he’s as competitive with the leading Republican candidate, former Lt. Governor Jane Norton, as Bennet is, his fundraising has been very poor to date compared with Bennet’s. The latest Rasmussen poll, one of the most respected in politics, shows both Romanoff and Bennet trail Norton by 12 percentage points. Other, more partisan polls by Bennet and a left-wing blog show the race is tighter. Perhaps Romanoff has a new poll?
UPDATE: Post reports Romanoff is not dropping out. Here are his prepared remarks.
Summary: He doesn’t think corporations, trade associations or other advocacy groups that represent millions of Americans should have a say in politics. Of course, he didn’t criticize the millions that unions pour into campaigns, probably including his. He thinks speculators like me are the problem. Nope, we make the economy hum as we invest in businesses that are growing and creating jobs. Romanoff is a typical Ivy League lefty who thinks big government is the solution. He pretends to oppose the serial corruption in Congress that we’ve seen the health, fiscal stimulus, TARP and immigration bills over the years. But he doesn’t call on Sen. Michael Bennett to vote against the corrupt health bill. That would cost him the support of the unions of government workers that own the Democratic Party.
So far, there is no reporting on any questions and answers that may have been exchanged by reporters and Romanoff. We’ll probably have to wait awhile to see reports on any more things that may have been said. Romanoff didn’t report on his fourth quarter fundraising.
