John Hickenlooper 43%, Tom Tancredo 35%, Dan Maes 16%
Tom Tancredo has soared to within eight percentage points of John Hickenlooper in a little over two weeks, according to Rasmussen Reports. And over the weekend, Tancredo told audiences that he'd heard that a Denver Post poll, which still hasn't been published, puts him within six points of Hickenlooper.
In the latest Rasmussen poll of likely voters, Hickenlooper beats Tancredo 43% to 35% while Maes is supported by 16%. Only 1% favor "some other candidate" and 5% are unsure. Rasmussen calls the race "leans Democrat," a downgrade from "Solid Democrat."
Clearly, Tancredo could take seven to eight points from Maes and three or four points out of the undecided category and win with 44% or 45% of the votes.
Still, the heavy advertising is only beginning today. How that will affect the standings is yet to be determined, but Hickenlooper has raised six to seven times as much money as Tancredo has. And money counts. On Saturday, Tancredo's announcement that he's raised more than $500,000 in only two months drew loud cheers from his audience at a Rocky Mountain Teaparty event.
