Ken Buck: Senator Michael Bennet should not vote to confirm Ben Bernanke

Ken Buck, a candidate for the Colorado Republican’s nomination for the U.S. Senate, said in a statement that appointed Democrat Senator Michael Bennet was wrong to vote in the Banking Committee to confirm Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke for a second term. The full Senate will vote on Bernanke’s nomination Thursday, and he’s expected to be confirmed. Buck’s statement follows the jump:

Ken Buck hits Bennet on Bernanke vote

Ben Bernanke was at the center of the biggest financial meltdown in U.S. history and does not deserve a second term, U.S. Senate candidate Ken Buck said Wednesday. The Senate will take its first procedural vote on Bernanke’s renomination Thursday.

“The Federal Reserve was the regulator in charge as Wall Street was taking one reckless gamble after another with Americans’ hard-earned money,” Buck said. “And we have seen in recent weeks that Federal Reserve officials encouraged the insurance giant AIG to conceal information from the Securities and Exchange Commission after that company’s bailout. This is not a record that warrants public trust, much less another term.”

Buck criticized Colorado’s appointed senator, Michael Bennet, for his vote in the Banking Committee to confirm Bernanke. “Whose interest is Michael Bennet serving here?” Buck asked. “His ‘yes’ vote certainly doesn’t reward responsible stewardship at the Fed. It could be that Bennet is just rubber-stamping the choice of another Washington special interest. This time it’s the big banks—the same bunch that made out like bandits under Bernanke and that have contributed almost $400,000 to Bennet’s re-election campaign.”

According to opensecrets.org, Bennet has collected $390,229 from finance-industry PACs and employees.

“Colorado’s senator should do what’s right for the people of Colorado, not carry water for Wall Street,” Buck said. “With his vote to confirm Bernanke, Bennet is demonstrating yet again that, in his list of priorities, the people of Colorado come last.”

  1. Someone has posted a nasty rumor type of comment that only could be made up trash about a potential campaign contributor and a candidate here. I will not allow this site to be used for that kind of rumor mongering.
