Legislators rally against Supreme Court’s decision on eminent domain
While the U.S. Supreme Court irrationally supported Pfizer’s plan to have a city drive residents out of their homes so it can build a new corporate campus, Congressional leaders from the left and right are joining in sponsoring legislation that would limit the power of local governments to use eminent domain on behalf of developers and other private businesses, including, probably, hospitals. Hospitals are among the most likely beneficiaries of the Supreme Court’s decision, which is being derided by the NAACP, AARP, conservatives, liberals and many others who have seen local officials abuse their powers time and again, especially when they have been under the influence of rich and powerful developers and corporations. It would be interesting to see a study that shows how often hospitals have benefitted from eminent domain decisons.
