Tom Tancredo promises to cut Colorado budget by 10%; his view of government

It is very hard for people who don't attend political events and listen to politicians and political candidates to get a sense of who they are, how they think and whether they are credible.

This is the reason that I've been filming Tom Tancredo and other candidates with a little Flip Video camera and posting short clips of their appearances here. This clip shows Tancredo explaining to the Rocky Mountain Teaparty event at the University of Denver Saturday that his view of goverment is that it just demands more and more money.

He points out that while he was the regional director for the U.S. Dept. of Education under President Reagan, he learned how bloated government agencies are and that they can be downsized. The anecdote is Tancredo's way of showing that he has been a bureaucrat and that he knows how the system works.

Drawing on his experiences as a member of the Colorado General Assembly's Joint Budget Committee and as a member of Congress, Tancredo says in addition to reforming PERA and Medicaid in Colorado, he would demand that his agency heads cut their budgets by 10%.

In previous apperances, he has pointed out that it would take time to work with the General Assembly and voters to implement the restructuring and budget cuts that he thinks Colorado needs. This is a long, 6 minute clip, but it gives you a good feel for how Tancredo thinks and teaches.
